Red tape prevents recruitment of Reservists, means more uncertainty for the military - Murphy

5 November 2012

Jim Murphy

Jim Murphy MP, Labour?s Shadow Defence Secretary, responding to reports that red tape is preventing the recruitment of Reservists and that there is a backlog of applicants, said:

"This news brings more uncertainty for the military community. ?Even the Tory MP who co-authored the policy has now said it isn?t working.?

"Following government cuts to manpower, the UK?s ability to meet military objectives is reliant on Reservists? development. ?This news casts doubt over the future capability, what we will be able to achieve overseas and our ability to recruit determined Reservist volunteers.?

"Labour supports an enhanced role for the Reserves, but we must improve the system to encourage and enable service-leavers and those made redundant to join, to support businesses in employing Reserves and to limit bureaucracy.?

"Reservists can be an important link between military and civilian communities and we must ensure their skills are maximised."?
