Five new species of cuckoo bees from the Cape Verde Islands

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? The biota of island archipelagos is of considerable interest to biologists. These isolated areas often act as 'evolutionary laboratories', spawning biological diversity rapidly and permitting many mechanisms to be observed and studied over relatively short periods of time. Such islands are often the places of new discoveries, including the documentation of new species.

The Republic of Cape Verde comprises 10 inhabited islands about 570 kilometers off the coast of West Africa and have been known since at least 1456. Although the bee fauna of the islands was thought to be moderately well known, research by Dr. Jakub Straka of Charles University in Prague and Dr. Michael S. Engel of the University of Kansas have shown that this is not the case. A recent study published in the Open Access journal ZooKeys documents the cuckoo bee fauna of the islands, revealing that their entire fauna of cuckoo bee species is in fact new to science.

These bees, like the more widely known cuckoo birds, invade the nests of other host bee species. While the host is out collecting pollen for its brood, the cuckoo bee female enters the nest and deposits her eggs on the food resource. The cuckoo bee egg hatches and the immature promptly dispatches the host egg, leaving the pollen and nectar reserves for itself.

The Cape Verde cuckoos are mostly large, black-and-white species, almost zebra-like in their appearance. However, one species, Chiasmognathus batelkai, is quite small, merely 3.2 -- 4.2 millimeters in length. Despite its small proportions, C. batelkai is still the largest species of its genus, a group which otherwise comprises even more diminutive species. It appears as though at slightly less than 5 mm, C. batelkai is a remarkable case of island 'gigantism', whereby founder effects or genetic drift lead to an increased body size in isolated populations during the initial stages of species origination and differentiation.

The researchers are now attempting to explore the diversity of the cuckoo bees' hosts and also to understand their evolutionary diversification across the archipelago.

Legalization of Undocumented Workers Proves Economically Advantageous in 7 States: Nevada, Virginia, Arizona, Florida, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico

Today, while immigration reform and fiscal responsibility are under discussion at the Republican National Convention, the Center for American Progress released ?The Consequences of Legalization Versus Mass Deportation,? outlining the economic and fiscal benefits of legalizing undocumented workers in Nevada, Arizona, Florida, Texas, Virginia, Colorado, and New Mexico. These findings highlight in concrete terms how devastating ?self-deportation? policy proposals would be for these states. By contrast, unleashing these workers? full potential by enabling them to earn legal status would dramatically grow state economies, increase tax revenues by billions of dollars, and create hundreds of thousands of jobs.

Credit card lending suffers biggest fall in six years

LONDON (Reuters) - British credit card lending suffered its biggest net fall in nearly six years in July, in a sign that households are reluctant to borrow more and casting doubt on any imminent rebound in consumer spending.

Bank of England figures on Thursday showed that net credit card lending fell by 147 million pounds, the biggest drop since August 2006, dragging overall unsecured consumer lending down by the largest margin since February this year.

The figures dampen hopes of a strong rebound in economic activity in July after nine months of recession, and contrast with official retail sales data that showed unexpectedly strong growth last month.

Mortgage approvals also remained weak, recovering slightly from June's 18-month low and coming in around economists' expectations at 47,312. But net mortgage lending was much higher than expected at 1.1 billion pounds, the biggest increase since January.

Nonetheless, the data back economists' forecasts for British house prices to stay flat or fall slightly over the coming year. Mortgage lender Halifax reported a 0.6 percent annual fall in house prices for the three months to July.

July's data is the last before the Bank's new Funding for Lending Scheme takes effect from August 1. Under the scheme, banks get access to cheap funding on condition that they pass it on in lending to businesses and home-buyers.

Before the 2008 financial crisis, monthly mortgage approvals ran at around 90,000, but the number of home sales has slumped since then and the property market has ceased to be a major driver of consumer spending.

Last week similar data from the British Bankers' Association showed a modest pick-up in the number of mortgage approvals in July after approvals on this measure sank to the lowest in 3-1/2 years in June, due partly to unusually wet weather and extra public holidays.

In one bright spot for the central bank, its preferred gauge of money supply, M4 excluding intermediate other financial corporations, rose at its fastest annual pace in more than three years. It grew by 3.9 percent, suggesting that the more than 325 billion pounds of quantitative easing asset purchases so far is having some impact on the money supply.

Key to Building Wealth: Discipline (Free Money Finance)

I've written several times about how discipline is the key characteristic to building wealth. Some examples:

Recently the blog of Dr. Thomas Stanley (author of The Millionaire Next Door) succinctly wrote about why this is the case:

Success in life and in work has been consistently tied to conscientiousness: being disciplined, having plans and focusing on details. Research in psychology consistently shows a relationship between this personality characteristic and how well someone will do on the job. Likewise, the research conducted on those with high net worth over a period of 30 years also provides insight into why they are balance sheet affluent ? they have a long-term, disciplined approach to saving, spending and investing. These individuals are not distracted by what others are doing (e.g., the Joneses).

Here's a short list of all the things it takes discipline to do:

  • Spend less than you earn.

  • Work to grow your career.

  • Earn money over and above your job.

  • Save, save, and save some more.

  • Make investments that grow over the long term.

  • Avoid bad money mistakes that can kill your finances.

In other words, it takes discipline to accomplish all the key steps that lead to growing your net worth. I think this is why so many Americans are in rough financial shape -- because they have little or no discipline when it comes to handling their money.

A lack of discipline is not the reason all people are in tough spots for sure (for instance, many disciplined people have been hit hard by the economy), but on average we live in a pretty discipline-less society. We want it all, and we want it now. Forget discipline -- give me what my neighbors, co-workers, relatives have -- or better/more than what they have.

Ugh.

But discipline is certainly the key to wealth. If there's a young person reading this today, know that if you apply discipline to how you handle your money, odds are that you will become wealthy over time. Good news: the steps (above) to take are simple. Bad news: they aren't easy.

And while discipline isn't easy, I can testify that it is certainly worth the time, effort, and sacrifice. I'm sure many others reading this post will agree as I know several of you have taken the steps above (in one form or fashion) and seen the rewards of your efforts.

Music Streaming Service Spotify Inks Deal With Germany?s Deutsche Telekom In Telco?s Wider Media Push

spotify germanyAdd one more distribution partner to Spotify's list as it seeks more scale for its music streaming service to make it more profitable: Deutsche Telekom, owners of T-Mobile, says that beginning in October, it will be making 18 million tracks from Spotify available to its 35.4 million customers in Germany, with the data usage associated with the streaming not counting against subscribers' data limits. The agreement is part of a larger push at the German operator to expand its media operations around the IFA consumer technology show in Berlin this week. The Spotify deal sounds similar to one that the music company has with Virgin Media in the UK, in which the cable operator bundles Spotify with its premium subscriptions and makes it available over its connected TV service, as a way of driving more subscribers to its pay-TV service.

Australian surfer in bloody shark attack

A surfer has been savaged by a shark off a remote west Australian beach in the sixth serious incident in the state in less than a year, with witnesses Wednesday telling of water "full of blood".

The man, reported to be in his 30s, was bitten on the abdomen and suffered severe injuries to his right arm while trying to fend off the shark at far-flung Red Bluff -- a popular surf spot about 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) north of Perth.

A fellow surfer dragged the man onto his board and brought him ashore after Tuesday afternoon's attack, with witnesses recounting gruesome scenes.

"The water was full of blood," said local woman Rebecca Caldwell.

The man was wrapped in towels to stem blood loss and driven almost two hours down unsealed roads to a waiting ambulance, according to Caldwell's husband Jim, the local campground manager.

"We were keeping him talking, that was the main thing, to keep him coherent," Caldwell told The West Australian newspaper, describing the victim as "tough as nails".

"It was all about keeping the pressure on, the blood loss was our biggest concern."

It is the sixth serious attack off Australia's west coast in less than a year, with a fatality north of Perth last month -- the fifth in less than 12 months -- renewing debate about whether great whites should remain protected.

Most fatal attacks in the region involve great whites, among the largest shark species in the world and made famous by the horror movie "Jaws".

Western Australia Fisheries spokesman Tony Cappelluti told ABC radio it was "very difficult to speculate" what kind of shark it was in the latest attack, with tiger sharks "fairly prevalent" in the area but great whites also present.

Cappelluti said the beach was closed but due to its remoteness authorities were not likely to hunt the shark in question, with "resources a bit thin up there".

Regional Filmmaking & The Cinematographic Langue | Zimbo Films

Regional cinema is more alive than ever, the availability of various means of film production has enabled just about anyone to contribute to the cinema.? Every major city seems to have its own epicenter of production, or at least exhibition.? With all of the contributors to the medium of film it?s peculiar that the arrangement of signifying units that compose a film have become locked into a generic message and function.? These units, be it a scene, sequence or act, in any kind of film, seem oriented more towards specifically cinematographic tactics in narrative filmmaking.? The independently produced short and feature length underground films of these various regions do not appear to be concerned with the inherent symbolic and philosophical ramifications of the narratives they have invented.? Style for style?s sake is as meaningless as technique for technique?s sense if a filmmaker is unable to control or predict the meaning behind the arrangement of these units in their films.

Christian Metz once commented ?a semiotics of connotation brings us closer to the notion of the cinema as an art?.? But what I find is the overwhelming motive of most regional films is tied more closely to a semiotics of denotation; the old fashioned idea that the cinema is strictly entertainment.? Today, when the majority of the population perceives the cinema as an art form, this kind of moviemaking forgoes any critical significance and therefore any meaning.? If, as Metz argues, ?the cinema took over some of the attributes of a language?, it is the filmmaker?s responsibility to exercise control over the meaning and interpretation of the units within the film they have created which communicates through a number of signifiers, whether they know it or not, a wealth of information to the audience.? If a filmmaker is unable to determine the meaning of his/her images, and the added meaning of their arrangement on even the most basic level, then they have failed to accurately communicate anything.? The failure to communicate in a film relegates that film to the world of expensive hobbies.

An untrained filmmaker such as Norman Mailer managed to align the signifying units of his films to communicate what he originally desired before production.? Mailer, a novelist before all else, sifted through his footage, selecting moments for their clarity of message, and then coordinated all of his units to create a coherent narrative.? What Mailer represents in its most basic form is an innovation in tactics concerning the possibilities within the means of film construction (editing).? That through his shortcomings as a director, Mailer was forced to invent his own process that could adhere his films to the processes of an audience.? As an amateur filmmaker, Mailer should be an example to regional filmmakers of the possibilities presented by inventiveness and the necessity of clear signifiers to the success of a film.

Modes of filmmaking with names like ?genre deconstruction? and ?abstract? have become speculative in the hands of most regional moviemakers.? These kind of terms are passed about not to justify a creative choice, but to excuse the lack of one.? Inevitably, when attending a screening of short films made in Philadelphia, a filmmaker will use one such a term when befuddled by what, from their perspective, appears to be a misunderstanding on the part of an audience member.? However, their own inability to manipulate the signifying units of their film communicated that message quite clearly to all the audience while the filmmaker was completely unaware.? The name-dropping of these kinds of tactics by regional filmmakers has become a defense mechanism, entirely conscious of the fact that the audience anticipates such condescension from the artist, and will defer all expertise to that artist as well.

What needs to happen must happen quickly if regional films and filmmakers are to survive with any critical credibility at all.? Filmmakers working independently outside of Hollywood must take responsibility for the medium, and must no longer be content with a decent plot, nice photography and passable sound.? Contentment must come from making a film that has meaning beyond the image and sound, in which all the components signify something essential to lingual communication, conveying information in terms both abstract and literal.

Burning-monk photographer Malcolm Browne dies

NEW YORK (AP) ? The phone calls went out from Saigon's Xa-Loi Buddhist pagoda to chosen members of the foreign news corps. The message: Be at a certain location tomorrow for a "very important" happening.

The next morning, June 11, 1963, an elderly monk named Thich Quang Duc, clad in a brown robe and sandals, assumed the lotus position on a cushion in a blocked-off street intersection. Aides drenched him with aviation fuel, and the monk calmly lit a match and set himself ablaze.

Of the foreign journalists who had been alerted to the shocking political protest against South Vietnam's U.S.-supported government, only one, Malcolm Browne of The Associated Press, showed up.

The photos he took appeared on front pages around the globe and sent shudders all the way to the White House, prompting President John F. Kennedy to order a re-evaluation of his administration's Vietnam policy.

"We have to do something about that regime," Kennedy told Henry Cabot Lodge, who was about to become U.S. ambassador to Saigon.

Browne, who died Monday at a New Hampshire hospital at age 81, recalled in a 1998 interview that that was the beginning of the rebellion, which led to U.S.-backed South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem being overthrown and murdered, along with his brother, Ngo Dinh Nhu, the national security chief.

"Almost immediately, huge demonstrations began to develop that were no longer limited to just the Buddhist clergy, but began to attract huge numbers of ordinary Saigon residents," Browne said in the interview.

Browne was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2000 and spent his last years using a wheelchair to get around. He was rushed to the hospital Monday night after experiencing difficulty breathing, said his wife, Le Lieu Browne, who lives in Thetford, Vt.

Browne spent most of his journalism career at The New York Times, where he put in 30 years of his four decades as a journalist, much of it in war zones.

By his own account, Browne survived being shot down three times in combat aircraft, was expelled from half a dozen countries and was put on a "death list" in Saigon.

In 1964, Browne, then an AP correspondent, and rival Times journalist David Halberstam both won Pulitzer Prizes for their reporting on the conflict in Vietnam. The war had escalated because of the Nov. 1, 1963, coup d'etat in which Diem was killed.

The plot ? by a cabal of generals acting with tacit U.S. approval ? was triggered in part by earlier Buddhist protests against the pro-Catholic Diem regime. These drew worldwide attention when the monk set himself afire in protest as about 500 people watched.

The burning monk photo became one of the first iconic news photos of the Vietnam War.

"Malcolm Browne was a precise and determined journalist who helped set the standard for rigorous reporting in the early days of the Vietnam War," said Kathleen Carroll, AP executive editor and senior vice president. "He was also a genuinely decent and classy man."

Hal Buell, who was a deputy photo editor in New York City when the photo of the burning monk was taken, said, "That picture put the Vietnam War on the front page more than anything else that happened before that. That's where the story stayed for the next 10 years or more."

Malcolm Wilde Browne was born in New York on April 17, 1931. He graduated from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania with a degree in chemistry. Working in a lab when drafted in 1956, he was sent to Korea as a tank driver, but by chance got a job writing for a military newspaper, and from that came a decision to trade science for a career in journalism.

He worked first for the Middletown Daily Record in New York, where he worked alongside Hunter S. Thompson, author of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Browne then worked briefly for International News Service and United Press, the forerunner of United Press International, before joining the AP in 1960. A year later, the AP sent him from Baltimore to Saigon to head its expanding bureau.

There, he became a charter member of a small group of reporters covering South Vietnam's U.S.-backed military struggle against the Viet Cong, a home-grown communist insurgency.

Within the year he was joined in Saigon by photographer Horst Faas and reporter Peter Arnett. By 1966, all three members of what a competitor called the AP's "human wave" had earned Pulitzer Prizes ? one of journalism's highest honors ? for Vietnam coverage.

Writing about official corruption and military incompetence, the group ? which also included the Times' Halberstam, Neil Sheehan of UPI, Charles Mohr of Time magazine, Nick Turner of Reuters and others ? were accused by critics in Vietnam and Washington of aiding the communist cause.

At one news briefing, Browne's persistent questions prompted an exasperated U.S. officer to ask, "Browne, why don't you get on the team?"

Browne, like some of his peers, initially saw the U.S. commitment to helping the beleaguered Saigon government as a reasonable idea.

In his 1993 memoir, "Muddy Boots and Red Socks," Browne said he "did not go to Vietnam harboring any opposition to America's role in the Vietnamese civil war" but became disillusioned by the Kennedy administration's secretive "shadow war" concealing the extent of U.S. involvement.

Amid the furor over tendentious coverage, some reporters claimed to have received death threats, and Browne said his name was among those on a list of "supposed enemies of (South Vietnam) who had to be eliminated."

In the 1998 interview, he said that he "never took that seriously" but that when South Vietnam government agents tried to arrest his wife, who had angered officials by quitting her information ministry job, Browne stared them down by standing in his doorway brandishing a souvenir submachine gun.

Tall, lanky and blond, Browne was a cerebral and eccentric character with a penchant for red socks ? they were easy to match, he explained ? and an acerbic wit befitting his grandfather's cousin, Oscar Wilde.

He ridiculed the word "media," for example, as "that dreadful Latin plural our detractors use when they really mean "scum."

Overall, associates saw him as complex, rather mysterious, and above all, independent.

"Mal Browne was a loner; he worked alone, did not share his sources and didn't often mix socially with the press group," recalled Faas, who died in 2012. "And stubborn ? he wouldn't compromise on a story just to please his editors or anyone else."

Browne wrote a 1965 book, "The New Face of War," and a manual for new reporters in Vietnam. Among its kernels of advice: Have a sturdy pair of boots, watch out for police spies who eavesdrop on reporters' bar conversations, and "if you're crawling through grass with the troops and you hear gunfire, don't stick your head up to see where it's coming from, as you will be the next target."

South Vietnamese officials censored early news reports but to mixed effects. At least once, Browne sent a story to the AP by surreptitiously taping a handwritten note over an innocuous photo being transmitted to Tokyo.

By 1965, impressed by how television appeared to be dominating the public discourse, the reporter who had never owned a TV set left the AP to join ABC News in Vietnam.

Browne quit ABC after a year over management questions.

After a venture into magazine writing, Browne joined The New York Times in 1968. He worked in Latin America, Eastern Europe and Asia, left again to edit a science magazine, and returned to the Times in 1985, mainly as a science writer. He also covered the 1991 Gulf War, again clashing with U.S. officials over censorship issues.

Earlier this month, on Aug. 11, Browne, sporting his trademark red socks, spoke in New York City at a memorial reception honoring his Saigon compatriots Faas and George Esper. He referred to the gathering as "a family reunion," saying he "always regarded the AP as his second family."

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Timothy; a daughter, Wendy, from a previous marriage; a brother, Timothy; and a sister, Miriam.

Browne will be buried on the family's property in Vermont, his widow said.

Sony unveils three new devices at IFA - Xperia T, Xperia V, Xperia J

    Xperia T

Sitting in on Sony's live IFA conference today, they've gone ahead and given the official stamp on three new devices. In order the Sony Xperia T, Xperia V, Xperia J will all be coming to market each offering their own individual features and price points.

The Xperia T will be the flagship leader here and as we've seen in previous leaks runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with an upgrade to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean shortly after launch. It also has a 720p display, 13MP camera and built-in NFC along with a 1.5GHz dual core processor

The Xperia V will be coming with LTE connectivity and NFC that allows for interaction with a wide array of upcoming Sony accessories. A 13MP camera will allow for HD video recording while the 1.5GHz dual core processor will keep Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich going until it gets upgraded to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean and if that's not enough, it's also water and dust resistant.

To close out their smartphone announcements, Sony introduced the Xperia J, which is their entry level offering running Android 4.0 out of the box with a 5MP shooter and only 512MB of RAM. The display leaves a lot to be desired, as it does not share the Bravia engine powered like the others instead, packs a 4.0” FWVGA Display. Videos, full specs and more of all can be found below. Xperia T will launch globally over the next few weeks. Xperia V and Xperia J will launch globally in calendar Q4 2012.

Compounds activate key cancer enzyme to interfere with tumor formation

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Scientists have known for decades that cancer cells use more glucose than healthy cells, feeding the growth of some types of tumors. Now, a team that includes researchers from the National Institutes of Health's new National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) has identified compounds that delay the formation of tumors in mice, by targeting a key enzyme that governs how cancer cells use glucose and its metabolites.

The study, published August 26 in the advance online publication of Nature Chemical Biology, was led by researchers from the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge. Researchers from the Structural Genomics Consortium at the University of Toronto and Harvard Medical School, Boston, also joined NCATS scientists to author the paper.

All cells use an enzyme called pyruvate kinase to derive energy from glucose. Recent studies have shown that cancer cells preferentially use one form of pyruvate kinase, called PKM2, which uses glucose to make additional cancer cells instead of energy. This altered metabolic state appears to be a fundamental aspect of many cancers, and reversing the process represents a new opportunity for cancer treatment.

In the study report, the researchers describe the identification of molecular compounds that activate PKM2, correct the way human cancer cells use glucose, and delay tumor development and decrease tumor size in mice. The results support PKM2 activation as a potential therapeutic strategy for cancer. However, the researchers emphasized there is much more work needed to understand the implications of their findings for humans, such as determining what types of tumors might be sensitive to PKM2 activation.

"The last several years have brought an avalanche of new discoveries that have begun to explain a phenomenon of altered cancer cell metabolism first described almost 90 years ago," said Christopher P. Austin, M.D., NCATS Division of Pre-Clinical Innovation director and one of the paper's authors. "This work provides a wonderful example of how molecular compounds can be used as tools to probe and understand biological processes, and at the same time explore new drug targets in the fight against cancer."

NIH Common Fund's Molecular Libraries Program supported this research, as well as the prior development of the PKM2 activators. Additional support was provided by NCATS.

"It is gratifying to see such important scientific discoveries made possible in part by the Molecular Libraries Program," said James M. Anderson, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives that guides the NIH Common Fund's programs. "This collaboration paired experts from two different scientific disciplines and transformed our understanding of cancer cell metabolism."

The study of cancer cell metabolism, pioneered by Nobel Laureate Otto Warburg in the early part of the 20th century, has witnessed a resurgence in research activity in recent years. New compound tools will be critical to dissecting the complex pathways that govern how cancer cells utilize nutrients such as glucose that provide the molecular building blocks to support rampant cell growth. The PKM2 activators detailed in the paper are among the first pharmacological compounds identified that will enable researchers to dig deeper into this key problem.

MIT researcher Matthew Vander Heiden, M.D., Ph.D., senior author of the paper and a medical oncologist whose lab studies cancer metabolism, has been a leading advocate of the idea that metabolic reprogramming provides cancer cells with an ability to prosper and grow. Previous work pioneered by Vander Heiden with Dimitrios Anastasiou and Lewis Cantley, both of Harvard Medical School, suggested that activating PKM2 might restore cancer cell metabolism to a normal state.

To test that theory, MIT researchers and the NIH formed a collaboration in 2008 to identify PKM2 activators, laying the foundation for the current study. NCATS researchers discovered the compounds, using a high-throughput screening robotic system. Researchers optimized the compounds in order to yield molecules with the needed pharmacological activity and the required physical properties for experimentation.

In the new study, the researchers focused their attention on how the compounds activate PKM2 and the effect this activation has on the formation of tumors. Hints as to the consequences of PKM2 activation were derived from experiments involving PKM1, a highly related enzyme of PKM2 that is found in healthy cells in an active state.

The unique mechanism of PKM2 activators prompted the research team to dig deeper into the metabolic consequences of activating PKM2. The researchers looked at the ability of the activators to mimic the results associating PKM1 expression with delayed tumor development. Aided by researchers at Agios Pharmaceuticals, Cambridge, Mass., they determined that one PKM2 activator, TEPP-46, could be used in a mouse study. The mice were given the compound, and it hindered tumor development and reduced tumor size.

"All cancers have PKM2, and learning about the basics of cancer cell metabolism and proliferation is essential to targeting human tumors," Vander Heiden said. "I am cautiously optimistic that as we learn more about cancer cell metabolism, we may be able to identify drugs that act on PKM2 or other metabolic enzymes that could be tested against human cancers."

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? It was pretty much all the money Bozena Oracz had after a working life as an accountant: the equivalent of $15,000. She placed it in a fund investing in gold, with the hope of paying for her daughter's studies and getting treatment for a bad knee.

Those dreams were dashed when she discovered she had fallen victim to an elaborate fraud scheme that has left thousands of Poles, many of them elderly, facing financial ruin.

The so-called Amber Gold affair is one of the biggest financial scandals to hit Poland since the fall of communism in 1989. The extent of wrongdoing is still murky, but it seems to have some elements of a pyramid scheme, meaning the financial institution used funds from new clients to pay off older clients rather than investing them.

Consumed with anger and desperation, 58-year-old Oracz traveled last week from a small town near Warsaw to a law firm in the capital to consider whether, after losing 50,000 zlotys, she should risk another 3,000 zlotys ($920; ?730) on the fee to join a class-action lawsuit seeking to recover some of the losses.

"This was a lot of money to me ? it was my savings," Oracz said, fighting back tears. Now retired and living on a small pension, she sees no way of building another nest egg. "My pension barely covers my needs," she said.

The affair has raised questions about the effectiveness of Poland's justice system and government because authorities failed to act against the scheme despite red flags from regulators and the criminal record of its young owner. Scrutiny has also focused on the prime minister due to business dealings his son had with those running the scheme. The scandal has even touched democracy icon Lech Walesa, who fears it could tarnish his good name.

Prosecutors say investors lost about 163 million zlotys ($50 million; ?40 million), a number that has been mounting as more and more victims come forward. Any law suits could take care years to go through the courts, with no guarantee of their outcome.

"People are desperate," said Pawel Borowski, a lawyer preparing the class-action suit that Oracz is considering joining. "In most cases the clients lost life savings or sold family properties to make investments."

The financial institution, Amber Gold, promised guaranteed returns of 10 to 14 percent a year for what it claimed were investments in gold. Many of its clients were older Poles who grew up under communism and lacked the savvy to question how a financial firm could guarantee such a high return on a commodity whose value fluctuates on the international market. The promised returns compared well to the 3 to 5 percent interest offered by banks on savings accounts ? earnings essentially wiped out by the country's 4 percent inflation rate.

"These were people with a low level of financial education," said Piotr Bujak, the chief economist for Poland at Nordea Markets. "They think it's still like in the old times, where everything was guaranteed by the state. They underestimated the risk."

Amber Gold launched in 2009, opening branches in city centers alongside respected banks, with white leather sofas and other sleek touches that conveyed sophistication and respectability. It bombarded Poles with convincing advertisements. Some early investors got out with their expected gains, adding to the fund's credibility.

The company, based in Gdansk, capitalized on gold's allure while playing on people's anxieties in unpredictable financial times. "We are dealing with a loss of confidence in the entire financial system and an urgent need for safe investments," one ad said. "The environment for gold is perfect."

Amber Gold drew in 50,000 investors over its three years of operation, though the company's founder, Marcin Plichta, said there were only about 7,000 at the time of liquidation.

Soon after Amber Gold began operations, the Polish Financial Supervision Authority put it on a "black list" of institutions that operate like banks without authorization. There are 17 other such black-listed institutions in operation, but the regulators lack the authority to shut them down. This has sparked a debate in the government and news media about whether courts should be more aggressive in intervening.

According to prosecutors, the company did use some of its money to invest in at least one legitimate business: It was the main investor in budget airline OLT Express. It was this investment that brought Amber Gold down ? when the airline filed for bankruptcy, Amber Gold entered liquidation and its scheme of investments unraveled. Its bank accounts were blocked and it was unable to return the money of thousands of its customers.

Plichta was charged this month with six counts of criminal misconduct.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk's center-right government went into damage-control mode when it emerged that the leader's son, Michal Tusk, had done PR work for the airline. Tusk said he had warned his son against doing business with Plichta but that ultimately he son makes his own decisions.

Leszek Miller, the head of the opposition Democratic Left Alliance, asked how Tusk could warn his son against involvement in the airline but not warn the thousands of Poles who invested in the fund. Miller has called for a parliamentary inquiry into the scandal.

Public discontent is also centering on the justice system because Plichta, 28, has past convictions for fraud, and many Poles are asking why authorities ? aware of his criminal record ? didn't stop him sooner. Born Marcin Stefanski, he took his wife's last name to distance himself from his past crimes.

The country's top prosecutor, Andrzej Seremet, admitted Monday that prosecutors were negligent in failing to heed multiple warnings since 2009 about Amber Gold from the financial supervisory body. He announced personnel changes in the office he blamed for mistakes.

The affair also has an unlikely connection to the Solidarity leader and former president, Lech Walesa, because an Oscar-winning director, Andrzej Wajda, was relying on money from Amber Gold to produce a film about Walesa's struggle in the 1980s.

Walesa came out publicly to make clear he is not involved in any way, saying he doesn't want his name "dirtied."

Many of the unlucky investors are not only furious but wracked by shame and guilt.

Engineer Andrzej Malinowski, 61, put three months of salary ? 25,000 zlotys ($7,660; ?6,100) ? into Amber Gold. He made the investment without consulting with his wife, sensing that there was some risk and that she would not have agreed.

Now he is so shaken and embarrassed that he doesn't want to talk about it, leaving his wife, Danuta Malinowska, to help unravel the mess.

"He saw that gold was going higher and higher so he believed that maybe it would be a good deal," Malinowska said. "Now he has so much guilt that I am trying to help ? contacting the lawyer, filling in the forms, writing to the prosecutors. But the justice system is very ineffective. I don't believe we will be getting any of this money back."
