What the Friday: DNA tests for your cat

Genetic science gets applied to feline ancestry and breed identification

Sure, you can get DNA tests if you're a human, but why should other members of the animal kingdom get left out? Fortunately, the Feline Genetics Laboratory at the University of California at Davis has got you covered with cat genome tests. These can tell you what part of the world your feline is from and whether it is one of the 29 "major fancy breeds," according to Wired.

For cat owners who want to verify their pet's pedigree, you can order the lab test online and then send back a swab from the inside of the animal's cheek. In 10 to 15 days, you'll know all there is to know about Fluffy's ancestry. The lab said its results are more than 90% accurate, but if your cat is a random mix of breeds, the test won't come back with much information.
