In the sports community most of us know Bill Cowher as a former NFL coach and CBS commentator. Two years ago melanoma claimed his wife?s life and now he is an advocate for awareness and prevention. He is one of the founding partners of Melanoma Exposed. Their motto; Screen, Protect, Know, Tell. Screen yourself monthly and visit a Dermatologist. Protect yourself by using sun safe habits daily. Know the dangers of too much UV exposure and Tell?a friend or family member to help spread awareness. Bill truly believes that you can?t repeat a message enough. Melanoma does ?not just affect the blonde and blue-eyed, no one is immune and everyone is susceptible.? Bill acknowledges the increased risk for coaches and players?they are out in the sun a lot.
With over 160,000 new cases diagnosed every year, sports figures among them, this is the perfect chance to reach a large community of Americans. Athletes have a high level of influence and it?s encouraging to see them using it to raise melanoma awareness. Melanoma Exposed is hosting free skin cancer screenings at football stadiums across the U.S.?Bill is hoping that people will see that the NFL is trying to be proactive by providing these free life-saving services?for fans?and provide opportunities for them to get screened at a game or pre-season practice.
If you live in the Denver, Miami, Baltimore, or New Jersey area be on the look out for a free skin cancer screening at your local stadium or practice field:
