Researchers have found new evidence of modern culture's beginnings in a cave in South Africa. These findings may indicate that 'modern behavior as we know it' has existed for longer than previously thought.?
By Emoke Bebiak,?Associated Press / July 30, 2012

The findings published in the journal "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" show that the 44,000-year-old artifacts are characteristic of the San hunter-gatherers. The descendants of San people live today in southern Africa, so the items can clearly be traced forward to modern culture, unlike other archaeological finds, researchers said.
South?African?researcher Lucinda Backwell said the findings are the earliest known instances of "modern behavior as we know it." Backwell said the discovery reinforces the theory that modern man came from southern Africa.
The carbon dating on the items shows that traces of the San culture may have existed earlier than the previous estimate of somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago, the journal said.
The find, discovered at Border Cave close to?South?Africa's northeastern border with Swaziland, is a comprehensive package of hunting kits and jewelry made of ostrich egg and marine shell beads.
Backwell, who was part of the team of international researchers that made the find, said the artifacts created as many as 44,000 years ago served the same purposes as they would today.
"They all have a specific reason we understand, that's why we can name them," Backwell said.
The researchers' articles said the Border Cave people used poisoned arrows to hunt and put spiral engraving on arrowheads to indicate ownership. The latter practice has been preserved in the San culture, they said.
Professor Francesco d'Errico of the French National Research Centre, who led the research team, said that the findings tell of a people who were highly evolved.
"They were fully modern genetically and cognitively," d'Errico said.
Their cognitive development is evident in their symbolic behavior, the professor said. The ostrich egg beads were not only ornaments, but played a major role in bartering with neighboring groups, he said. That practice continues today.
The paper claimed that the?fossils?show that all modern culture came from southern Africa, though the researchers acknowledged it remains difficult to pinpoint where in history that modernity began.
Eric Delson, a paleoanthropologist at Lehman College of the City University of New York, said that while the testing used by the researchers to determine the age of the?fossils?was very clear and reliable, the findings didn't support the idea that all modern human cultures are connected to this find.
He said there is evidence that a modern culture already existed in Europe around the time the new find is dated.
"They say, 'Modern human behavior first found!'" Delson said. "Well, not exactly."
He did, however, applaud the research for finding the origins of one specific group of modern people.
Scientists from Britain, France, Italy, Norway,?South?Africa and the U.S. all took part in the research, helmed out of the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

Gmail?s video chat capabilities are set to get a major revamp, with Google announcing that they?re replacing the current implementation with the option to start ?Hangouts? right from users? inboxes. This is arguably the standout feature of Google+ and now Gmail users will also be able to video chat with up to nine people at once, watch YouTube videos together, collaborate on Google documents and share their screens.
Google notes that users participating in Hangouts need to have Google+ accounts for all of these features to work in Gmail, although standard one-to-one video calls will presumably work the same as before.
The company says users can expect better reliability and enhanced quality compared to Gmail's old peer-to-peer video chats. They?ll also get the option to reach contacts not only when they are using Gmail but also if they are on Google+ in the browser or on their Android or iOS devices.
Hangouts in Gmail will begin rolling out today and then gradually over the coming weeks. It?s an interesting addition to an already-handy service and comes hot on the heels of their Sparrow acquisition, which some believe could result in an official Gmail client for the desktop eventually.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - China's respect for religious freedom deteriorated last year as it interfered with Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in ways that may have contributed to a dozen Tibetan self-immolations, the United States said on Monday.
In its annual International Religious Freedom Report for 2011, the State Department said it discerned a rise in anti-Semitism around the world as well as the increased use of anti-blasphemy laws to restrict the rights of religious minorities.
It said conditions worsened in countries such as Iran, where the report cited state "imprisonment, harassment, intimidation and discrimination based on religious beliefs," as well as Pakistan, where "abuses continued under the blasphemy law."
The State Department also cited "a marked deterioration" in official respect for and protection of religious freedom in China, including greater restrictions on religious practice especially in Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and nunneries.
"Official interference in the practice of these religious traditions exacerbated grievances and contributed to at least 12 self-immolations by Tibetans in 2011," the report said.
In Iran, with which the United States has had acrimonious relations since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, religious freedom "deteriorated further from an already egregious situation," the State Department said.
It cited the restoration of 20-year sentences for seven Bahais charged with spying for and collaborating with Israel as well as the imprisonment of Yousof Nadarkhani, a Christian pastor sentenced to death for apostasy.

When Kazuo Inamori took on the task of leading the turnaround of Japan Airlines Co. in January 2010, he had precisely zero experience in aviation management.
But like many in the country?s older generations, the veteran entrepreneur knew the company well enough from the outside, if not always fondly, having racked up plenty of time inside JAL?s planes as a passenger, first flying with the carrier in the 1950s.
In a recent interview on the 24th floor of the company?s headquarters overlooking Tokyo Bay, with Haneda airport in the distance, 80-year-old Mr. Inamori, a slight, gray-haired figure in a sober suit, explained how he delivered a blunt message when he arrived at the company; why he believes his unifying management style could work in any company; and why Western management system are more like ?an autocracy.?
Here are edited excerpts of the interview.
Q. What was your impression of JAL before you went to work there? Were you a regular client?
A. When you went to the counter, met JAL employees, cabin attendants, everything was just done by the book and there was no heart in the services, no feeling of providing the best hospitality. In some ways, they seemed very arrogant? On the first day I came into the company and talked with managers, I told them that I disliked JAL and hadn?t flown JAL for a while.
Q. How did you approach management in an industry in which you had no experience?
A. I didn?t know anything about the airline industry, but I communicated my philosophy to everyone at the company to share the basic thinking. This has been successful and the company has reemerged.
My style is to have the whole company share a single philosophy, from the top-ranking executives to low-ranking employees, and then manage the company based on that philosophy. I think this can be applied to any industry.
I founded Kyocera Corp. when I was 27 years old. Kyocera now generates about Y1.2 trillion in revenue and more than Y100 billion in operating profit, and it has never made a loss in its 53-year history. Another company I created more than 20 years ago is now KDDI Corp., which is the second biggest telecommunications carrier in Japan. It has had remarkable achievements.
Q. You?re convinced your philosophy can work in any industry, including aviation?
A. There?s one condition.
When I first came to JAL, I told executives that we have to state the management?s philosophy and share that with everyone at the company. I also told them we don?t need many statements. One thing we need to say is that the management?s goal is to pursue the happiness of all employees, both physically and mentally? That was what it all came down to.
It wasn?t for shareholders, and it wasn?t for executives. It was for all the employees working at the company. We put that at the very beginning of our philosophy statement. ?This is your company, and it?s goal is to make all of you happy.?
To share the idea that the company?s goal is to make all employees happy is a prerequisite, before sharing any other ideas. The whole philosophy wouldn?t work without this prerequisite.
Q. How does your management style compare with Western methods?
A. Many U.S. companies think the management?s goal is to maximize their shareholder value. They hire talented individuals for top management positions by paying them high salaries. If they are successful, they get bonuses. It?s a merit-based system where executives are rewarded based on their achievements. In this system the top management team often uses employees like their tools.
My style is different. All employees have the same mindset as executives, and we run the company together. That?s a completely different style (from U.S. companies). I think this style can be useful at other Japanese companies, as long as they agree with that style and put it into practice in running their businesses.
I think management systems in the U.S. and Europe are more like an autocracy, where companies are run by only a handful of people. My style is to have everyone involved. It?s like a bunch of people carrying a Japanese mikoshi (a portable Shinto shrine). It may not seem sophisticated, but the crowd gradually becomes one. For this to work, they have to be united by one philosophy.
There?s an old saying in Japanese: ?Issho ko narite bankotsu karu? ? ?A general?s success is built on the bones of ten thousand soldiers.? This could be taken to mean that one person at the top becomes really successful, while everyone else working under him becomes exhausted.
Q. At the start of this year, you chose Yoshiharu Ueki to become president and effectively succeed you when you leave JAL early next year. Mr. Ueki has 35 years? experience as a pilot, but relatively little experience as a manager. What made you choose him?
A. I appointed Mr. Ueki because of his personality: I think he has a wonderful character. A person at the top, of course, has to be experienced and knowledgeable about the business. But at the same time, above all else, I think personality and character are important. And that?s the quality I see in ?Ueki-kun? (young Ueki).
I don?t think we need to worry much. He has been learning a lot about how to look all the numbers and how to steer the operations.
What?s more challenging is looking at issues with a broad perspective and making decisions. If he ever finds it difficult to decide, I think he will come and talk to me, even when I?m retired.

Should you live in Japan and have the urge to purchase a pretty large smartphone, then good news from LG. The 5-inch, LTE compatible Optimus Vu can be yours on NTT DoCoMo, which carries the device as part of their "NEXT" range. As a Japanese exclusive, limited models of the Vu will carry a special "JoJo Bizarre Adventure" design on the rear and the UI. Only 15,000 of these special editions will be available, so snap them up quickly if it's something for you.
NTT DoCoMo has added a million LTE customers to their books in under 2 months. With LTE subscribers appearing at that rate, there is a definite market for the Vu. With its 4:3 aspect ratio it won't suit everyone, but the Japanese version will come equipped with a high-definition multimedia broadcast receiver -- something to do with video, perhaps -- which is bound to make full use of that screen real estate. A settlement over the class action lawsuit against Netflix for privacy issues, which included retaining personally identifiable data with respect to customer video renting and viewing habits, has been reached, and if you are a current or former Netflix subscriber, you may have received an email notice of the class action settlement. The email, sent from ?Online DVD Class Action Administrator?
It all stems from Netflix? practice of retaining both credit card and video renting and viewing habits of their customers, even a year or more after the customer has cancelled their service. While retaining aggregate rental and viewing data - not connected to a specific customer - is in keeping with current Internet business practices, it?s not cool to keep it coupled with personally identifying information of former customers. That is why part of the settlement involves Netflix ?decoupling? the data.
And, it?s never cool to keep your customers? credit card information once they are no longer your customers.
Of course, all that said, there is nothing in it for the average Netflix user (i.e., most members of the ?class? in the class action - including you, unless you are a ?named plaintiff?). What you get is the comfort of knowing that Netflix is no longer allowed to associate your viewing and rental data with you - at least, once you are no longer a Netflix customer.
If You Are a Current or Former Netflix Subscriber
A Class Action Settlement Could Affect You
Para una notificaci?n en Espa?ol, llamar 1-866-898-5088 o visitar www.VideoPrivacyClass.com
Our records show that you were a current or former Netflix subscriber as of July 5, 2012. We are emailing to tell you about a Settlement that may affect your legal rights. Please read this email carefully. Go to www.VideoPrivacyClass.com for more information.
A Settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit that claims Netflix unlawfully kept and disclosed information, including records on the movies and TV shows its customers viewed. Netflix denies that it has done anything wrong.
What does the Settlement provide?
Netflix has agreed to change its data retention practices so that it separates (known as ?decoupling?) Entertainment Content Viewing History (that is, movies and TV shows that someone watched) from identification information for those subscribers who have not been a Netflix subscriber for at least 365 days, with some exceptions.
In addition, Netflix will pay $9 million into a Settlement Fund to:
? Make donations to Court-approved not-for-profit organizations, institutions, or programs.
? Pay notice and settlement administration expenses.
? Pay attorneys? fees of up to 25% or $2.25 million of the Settlement Fund, plus up to $25,000 in expenses.
? Pay a total incentive award of $30,000 to the Named Plaintiffs.
Proposals from potential donation recipients will be sought, and, after consideration, recommendations will be made to the Court. A list of the proposed donation recipients will be posted on the website.
Your Options
If you do nothing, you will remain in the Settlement and your rights will be affected. If you do not want to be included, you must exclude yourself by November 14, 2012. If you exclude yourself you will keep your right to sue Netflix about the claims in this lawsuit. If you remain in the Settlement, you can object to it by November 14, 2012.
The Court will hold a hearing on December 5, 2012 to consider any objections, whether to approve the Settlement, award attorneys? fees, and incentive award. You can appear at the hearing, but you don?t have to. You can hire your own attorney, at your own expense, to appear or speak for you at the hearing.

49ers receiver Randy Moss did a lot of talking on UStream after he decided to return to the NFL and before he found a team.? Since finding a team, he hasn?t done much talking.
On Friday at training camp, he did.
?These guys here love to work, they love to compete and they know just by me signing here it?s just something that me being around a great group of guys [who are] young and enthusiastic makes me feel young, too,? Moss said in comments broadcast on ESPN?s NFL Live.? ?The love that I have for the game of football is gonna always be in me and I just wanna play football and that?s just really being here and Coach Harbaugh and this organization accepting me and bringing me here was just something hopefully I can give something back in return and that?s with my play and my presence out on and off the field.?
Also on Friday, coach Jim Harbaugh continued with the gushing that has emanated from multiple members of the organization throughout the offseason.? ?The funnest part is out on the practice field,? Harbaugh said.? ?I get some joy being around Randy Moss out there.? He?s got a knack for saying the right thing at the right time.? The right joke at the right time.?
The joke ultimately may be on those who are ready to write off Randy?s chances of playing well in 2012.? After his comments were played during NFL Live and Herm Edwards said Moss could catch 10 touchdown passes this year, Adam Schefter and Bill Polian were skeptical, to say the least.
?Ten touchdowns is awfully high for a player who was out of football last year, who had a minimal impact the year before, who basically hasn?t made a contribution ? a meaningful contribution ? since 2009,? Schefter said.? ?There?s a spot for him in the San Francisco 49ers offense.? But we?re not getting the 25-year-old Randy Moss, we?re getting the 35-year-old Randy Moss.?
Polian was more blunt.
?The guy I saw two years ago, played against was not the Randy Moss who set records in New England,? Polian said.? ?I didn?t see any explosion, didn?t see any speed.? [Editor's note:? Darrelle Revis may disagree.]? So, he?ll have to make a believer out of me.? If he?s doing well by Week Eight then he?s back.? Otherwise, I have my doubts.?
It would be easy to agree, given the manner in which Moss disappeared in Tennessee after being essentially fired by two teams in less than a month.? But two factors could prove them wrong.
First, the praise of Moss from his teammates, both for his performance and his attitude, has been universal and unequivocal.? Everyone in San Fran loves the guy, and everyone who has seen him work since joining the 49ers believes he can still get it done.
Second, we?ve seen this movie before from Moss.? After his second year with the Raiders in 2006, the popular view was that Moss was washed up, that he was done, that he couldn?t run.
Rejuvenated by a trade to the Patriots, Moss ran down Jerry Rice?s record for single-season touchdown receptions, propelling the Pats to the first undefeated 16-game season.
When Randy?s head isn?t in it, it doesn?t matter what his body can do.? When Randy is ready to go, his team will get the best of whatever he has.
The point is that we shouldn?t assume anything about Randy?s physical abilities based on what we saw in 2010 because his performance was hampered by the fact that he didn?t care.
He cares now.
?I play when I wanna play.?? It arguably belongs on his tombstone.? For now, it should prompt anyone who thinks based on 2010 that he won?t have it in 2012 to think again.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Investors are dumping Facebook's stock, spooked by slowing revenue growth, the lack of a financial outlook and plans to spend more money in the coming months.
Are they right?
Only if they are thinking in the short term. Investors can expect Facebook's stock to be volatile for a few years. But analysts say those willing to wait will likely be rewarded ? someday.
"I view it as a tomorrow stock," says Christian Bertelsen, chief investment officer at wealth management firm Global Financial Private Capital.
"The whole thing on Facebook is, look, if your time horizon is hourly, weekly or even monthly, this is not the stock for you," he adds. "You need to take a much longer-term view on it."
That's about three or four years, he says.
Founded in CEO Mark Zuckerberg's Harvard dorm room in 2004, Facebook was a product of the PC era. Now, in the age of mobile computing, a growing number of people are accessing Facebook through their iPhones, Android gadgets and tablet computers. Yet Facebook is only now starting to figure out how to make money from its mobile audience.
"The company is going through an almost painful transition from desktop to mobile," Baird analyst Colin Sebastian says.
He calls Facebook "a speculative investment," but one with plenty of potential.
"With almost one billion users, Facebook is amassing the most comprehensive user profile database in existence," Sebastian says. This, he adds, offers a "significant opportunity" to reap a big chunk of the global advertising market, which is currently at $500 billion a year.
"Amazon comes to mind immediately," Bertelsen says.
After that company went public in 1997, at the time mainly just an online bookstore, critics were quick to cry dot-com bust, call its business a broken, and so on. Today, it is the world's biggest online retailer, selling everything from DVDs to vacuum cleaners to Web storage.
"Now they are the retailer to the world," he adds.
Amazon.com Inc.'s stock price grew to more than $200 a share, from less than $2. Of course, Facebook has started out much higher, at $38.
Facebook's first earnings report since its rocky initial public offering on May 18 was the second coming that didn't quite materialize. So investors sent Facebook's stock to its lowest level ever on Friday. Shares fell $3.14, or nearly 12 percent, to close at $23.71 after hitting $22.28 in the morning. The previous low was $25.52, reached on June 6.
The stock dropped despite the fact that Facebook's second-quarter results met Wall Street's expectations, with revenue one-third higher than last year.
Given the rocky economy and investors' heightened sensitivity to a stock's value, betting on a company becomes a "show-me story" for many of them, Sebastian says. That means investors want proof rather than Facebook's word that it can grow its revenue and make a profit.
Facebook, for now, is more of a tell-me story, one whose success or failure will play out in the coming quarters, or even years. The company hasn't shown all it can do. Its revenue growth slowed. The company's revenue nearly tripled in 2010, compared with 2009.
In the first quarter of this year, revenue climbed 44 percent, higher than the 32 percent increase in the second quarter. Following in Google's footsteps, it did not offer financial guidance for the coming quarters, which makes it a riskier bet for investors.
Facebook also said it plans to increase its investments in the coming quarters. Higher expenses could mean lower profits.
Facebook, which is based in Menlo Park, Calif., was valued at $104 billion when it went public two months ago. That means investors placed a higher value on its stock than established companies such as McDonald's, Pepsi and even Amazon.
With Facebook's stock hitting a new low on Friday, the company lost as much as 39 percent of its value. It's now around $66 billion, a little more than 3M, the company that makes Scotch tapes, stethoscopes and sandpaper. It's also in the same range as American Express.
Despite the doubts, Mike Magan of Carmel, Ind., plans to keep the 10 shares he bought at $34.25 each a few days after Facebook went public.
"I bought this thinking it was going to be something I was going to pass down to my kids," said Magan, who works for an industrial marketing firm. "I see this as a company that will be an Apple."
Other stocks he owns include Apple, naturally, which he bought a decade ago. Back then, it was trading at around $8 to $10. Now, it's pushing $600 as the world's most valuable company, thanks to successes with the iPhone and the iPad ? the same devices confounding Facebook.
"My purchase of Facebook was a vote of confidence," Magan says, adding that he buys stock about every three to four years.
Analysts are generally positive on Facebook. Of the 27 analyst ratings available from FactSet, 15 are "Buy" or equivalent, while just three are a "Sell." Analysts tend to have longer-term views of stocks than many day-to-day investors.
"We don't view these results as dramatically good or bad," Citi analyst Mark Mahaney says. "Key questions remain: the future of Facebook mobile monetization and the future of Facebook user engagement."
