NWU Hires Fleming as First Swimming Coach

LINCOLN, Neb. ? Nebraska Wesleyan University has named Greg Fleming as its first head swimming coach. It was announced in June 2013 that men?s and women?s swimming would be added as a varsity sport in the 2014-15 school year.

Fleming is a longtime swimming coach in Lincoln serving as the Head Boys & Girls Swimming & Diving Coach at Lincoln East High School for the past 29 years. With the Spartans he had a combined dual record of 496-32 winning two state championships and nine state runner-up finishes.

?It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that I announce the hiring of Greg Fleming as our swimming coach,? NWU athletic director Ira Zeff said. ?We are very fortunate to have someone with his experience and history of success to start our men?s and women?s swimming program.?

While coaching at Lincoln East, Fleming had a combined 94 state individual/relay event state champions and coached 35 All-Americans. His teams won 18 boys and 14 girls Greater Nebraska/Heartland Conference titles and 29 total Lincoln City Championships. He was the Nebraska Swimming Coaches Association Boys Coach of the Year in 2012 and as twice been named Swimming Coach of the Year by the Nebraska Coaches Association.

Fleming said. ?Nebraska Wesleyan?s decision and commitment to field a women?s and men?s team will provide another opportunity for area swimmers. NWU?s strong academic tradition and reputation will allow us to recruit some of the top student-athletes in thearea.?

Fleming has worked for Lincoln Public Schools since 1982 serving as the Student Services Coordinator at Lincoln East since 1992. He received his bachelor of science in education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and earned hismasters of education in educational leadership from Doane College. He and his wife Becky have two sons, Ryan and Josh.

He will begin at NWU immediately to start recruiting student-athletes as the Prairie Wolves will begin varsity competition in the 2014-15 athletic season.
