The true measure of a classic album is not its immediate impact, but rather its ability to stand the test of time. On November 29, 1994, Mary J. Blige released her groundbreaking My Life LP, and on November 23, almost 17 years to the day, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul will be celebrating with a special Mary J. Blige My Life concert at New York's Terminal 5.
"I think My Life is so relevant now and will always be relevant. It's etched in stone in the music world and people's personal lives because it was the very first time that someone said something that people were thinking," Mary told MTV News while on the set of her "Mr. Wrong" video. "I was speaking from my own life and my own trials and tribulations. Turns out 4 million other people were feeling the exact same thing at the same time."
Soul-baring songs like "I'm Going Down," "Be Happy" and the LP's title track painted a picture of a love-torn woman on a road of self-discovery. The RIAA has certified the album three-times platinum, and My Life was named one of Rolling Stone's 50 Essential Women in Rock Albums and 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. With all of the LP's accolades, it makes sense for MJB to revisit her classic work.
Just two days before the show, Blige is scheduled to release My Life II ... The Journey Continues (Act I). "When something that big hits the universe — it's a big deal. I think that's why it's around: It's a self-help book to remind people of how far they've come or to let them know somebody can relate to your pain as well," MJB said of the original 1994 album before relating it to the sequel. "And that's what this album is about as well."
Tickets for Mary J. Blige's November 23 My Life Concert are on sale now at Live Nation and start at $105.
