Kim Kardashian files for divorce (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Reality TV star Kim Kardashian filed for divorce on Monday, just 72 days after marrying basketball player Kris Humphries in a lavish wedding that was billed as a "fairytale."

Kardashian, 31, star of the TV show "Keeping Up With the Kardashians", filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court citing irreconcilable differences.

"After careful consideration, I have decided to end my marriage. I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision. I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don't work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best," Kardashian said in a statement.

The court papers show Kardashian has asked the court to confirm that jewelry and other personal items, as well as earnings before and during the marriage, be considered separate property. It also notes the couple has a prenuptial agreement.

Kardashian and Humphries married on August 20 in southern California in a wedding reported to have cost $10 million, after dating for about nine months. More than three million U.S. viewers watched a two-part TV special earlier this month called "Kim's Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian event".

But claims of tension in the marriage erupted quickly and have spread across entertainment media for the past week. Some reports have suggested Humphries, a 26-year-old New Jersey Nets basketball player, was reluctant to play his role in the Kardashian brand, and there were differences over where the newlyweds would make their home.

This is the second divorce for Kardashian, who was previously married to music producer Damon Thomas for four years, separating in 2004. Since then, the reality star has had a number of high-profile relationships including R&B singer Ray-J and American football player Reggie Bush.

Kardashian is one of the highest-paid reality stars on U.S. television with 2010 earnings estimated at $6 million from her TV show, clothing line, perfume, jewelry and tanning cream and other product endorsements and appearances.

China railway construction workers killed in road accident (Reuters)

SHANGHAI (Reuters) ? Twenty-one people were killed and seven injured when a vehicle carrying railway construction workers overturned in northwest China's Gansu Province on Saturday, the official Xinhua news agency said.

China has invested heavily on railway infrastructure to connect the vast country during years of strong economic growth.

But authorities recently suspended new rail projects after a collision between two high-speed trains in July killed 40 people and fanned public anger over transport safety issues.

Shanghai authorities also came under fire in September after the worst subway accident in 42 years raised fresh concerns that the world's second-largest economy was sacrificing safety in the rush to develop.

Xinhua said the vehicle overturned in Manwa township in Lintao County. It was not immediately known how many were in the vehicle, which was heading to a railway construction site.

It was also not clear if all those killed and injured were construction workers.

Local authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, Xinhua said.

Conservative, leftist up for Bulgaria presidency (AP)

SOFIA, Bulgaria ? Bulgarians on Sunday are choosing between a member of the ruling center-right party and a leftist ex-foreign minister in an election run-off for the presidency of the impoverished, corruption-plagued country.

Although most of the power in Bulgaria rests with the prime minister and Parliament, the president leads the armed forces and can veto legislation and sign international treaties.

Polls opened at 6 a.m. (0400 GMT) on Sunday and close at 7 p.m. (1700 GMT). Some 6.9 million people are eligible to vote.

A vote last Sunday yielded two top candidates, neither of whom achieved the 50 percent required for outright victory. Ruling conservative party candidate Rosen Plevneliev garnered just over 40 percent of votes, while Ivailo Kalfin ? who ran on the opposition Socialist party ticket ? got nearly 29 percent.

With the gap between the front-runners just over 375,000 votes, both candidates have tried to rally support outside their parties' traditional voters.

Plevneliev, 47, a former entrepreneur, has been lauded for pushing through several large-scale infrastructure projects as regional development minister in the incumbent cabinet. He has pledged to reduce the budget deficit and pursue business-friendly policies in the economically struggling country.

Kalfin, 47, has pledged to safeguard democracy and the rule of law. The European Parliament member is one of the few top left-wing politicians seen as largely untainted by the Socialist party's communist past. During his term as foreign minister, Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007.

The winner replaces Georgi Parvanov, a former leader of the Socialist Party who has often criticized the government and used his powers to veto legislation or key judicial office or diplomatic service appointments. Parvanov has served two five-year terms, the legal limit.

Former European Commissioner Meglena Kuneva, running as an independent, came in third in last Sunday's vote. But Kuneva has refused to endorse Kalfin or Plevneliev for the second round, saying they both stand for things she cannot agree to.

(AP) ? Seven relatives on a family trip from Chicago to New York, including a newborn being taken to meet his grandparents, were killed when their minivan hit a deer on an Indiana highway and a semitrailer slammed into them from behind.

"The pain is very strong," Manuel Quizhpi, who said he was the brother of one of the victims, told The Chicago Tribune (http://trib.in/theScq).

None of the minivan's 10 occupants were wearing seatbelts during the crash Thursday night on the Indiana Toll Road about 10 miles east of South Bend, state police Sgt. Trent Smith said. Smith said the infant, who the Tribune said was a 1-month-old boy, was in a car seat but had not been buckled in.

Quizhpi told the Tribune all of those on board were Ecuadoran immigrants living in Chicago's Albany Park neighborhood.

He said six adults and four children were in the minivan, including the baby's father, a construction worker in his early 30s, who was driving. Quizhpi said the driver was in a coma and his wife was killed. Others in the van included a 9-year-old boy, an 8-year-old girl and a boy either 15 or 16, he told the newspaper.

Quizhpi declined to give the names of the victims. Smith said family members were coming about 100 miles from the Chicago area on Friday to help identify them.

The semitrailer was going about 65 mph when it hit the van in the highway's eastbound lanes shortly after the van struck a deer and stopped or slowed down about 8 p.m., Smith said. Both vehicles ended up in the center median, blocking traffic in both directions for several hours.

Firefighters and emergency workers at the scene of the crash swarmed around the crumpled remains of the minivan, its side shredded with a torn hunk of metal pinned beneath one of the semi-tractor's tires.

Two of the minivan's three injured occupants ? a man and a woman ? were taken by helicopter for treatment and were in critical condition Friday. Another man was in stable condition, Smith said.

Preliminary tests indicated that the trucker ? Jesse Donovan, 24, of Johnston, R.I. ? had not been drinking alcohol, Smith said. Donovan was released was a hospital after treatment for minor injuries. Smith said Donovan didn't face any charges at this time.

Donovan was an employee of Roehl Transport Inc. of Marshfield, Wis., which owns the truck, said Vice President of Workforce Development and Administration Greg Koepel.

"Our hearts go out to those in the accident and their families," said Koepel, who said the company would have no further comment.

Stu Kreisman: The Next Great TV Drama

There is a great new show that premiered on Starz last week. Kelsey Grammer plays Tom Kane, the mayor of Chicago, in the new series Boss. Not since The West Wing have I seen a better portrayal of politics on the small screen. It's an excellent show and well worth your time.

The reviews were mostly positive, some glowing. However, in this age of instant analysis, the comments following the reviews were curious to say the least. A large portion of the comments had to do with Grammer's own political beliefs (he's a conservative) as opposed to the quality of the show itself.

A lot of the readers automatically assumed that because Grammer was the star and the show was about a fictional mayor, it was a right wing hit job. Others speculated that the reason the show was about the mayor of Chicago was to somehow smear President Obama. Nonsense.

The show is about politics and power. The political party is never identified because the plot and actions can apply to either side of the political spectrum. Why Chicago? Well, my guess is when you want to do a series about someone who rules a major city with an iron fist you usually think of Chicago first, not Salt Lake City.

As for Grammer's participation, he's the star because he's an excellent actor. (He is also one of the producers of the series.) This just in: there are a lot of conservatives working in the entertainment industry and as with liberals, their political beliefs are not brought to the sets or influence the product. In fact, Grammer recently stared on Broadway in La Cage aux Folles, the musical of which the movie The Birdcage was based. Not exactly playing to his base.

If you can't separate political beliefs from the opposing side's acting, writing or directing ability, then you're missing out on a lot of great entertainment. If you can only see the finished product through the political prism then it's your loss.

Boss airs Fridays at 10pm on Starz movie network. In my opinion it's the next great political drama. It would be a pity if your prejudices caused you to miss it.

Satellite hack attacks: Reaction

Hackers interfered with two US satellites four times between 2007 and 2008, according to reports.

The claim is made in a draft paper prepared for the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, according to the Bloomberg news agency.

It said the incidents involved the Landsat-7 and Terra AM-1 earth observation systems which were targeted through a ground station in Norway. The satellites are used to observe the earth's climate and terrain.

The report highlights the risks that would have been posed had the breaches involved satellites with "more sensitive functions".

The draft document notes that previous penetrations have involved individuals linked to the Chinese underground community. The Chinese government has repeatedly denied its role in computer attacks.

The BBC asked three security experts for their views:

If there really has been a serious security problem with these two satellites, I would argue that to be entirely due to negligence by its designers or operators.

It has long been basic computer-science textbook knowledge how to implement "cryptographic end-to-end message authentication", a very effective technique to prevent unauthorized parties executing commands on remote devices.

This story appears to be little more than someone gaining temporary access to some remote computer that steers a satellite dish.

These link stations merely forward messages to and from satellites, like a postal delivery service.

The security of the satellite does not have to rely on the security of any particular remote dish antenna.

A serious security risk to a satellite would be someone disrupting all communication with it by jamming its uplink frequencies.

But that is hardly practical for these polar orbiting satellites, which fly very low and are therefore visible from any point on Earth only for a few minutes at a time.

If such a satellite cannot talk to one link station, it must be prepared to use the next one on its path.

In a well-designed satellite system, it should not make much difference if one ground antenna is unavailable for a while, be it due to some teenage hacker or just heavy snowfall.

The thing to remember about satellites is that they do not just support military operations, but they also provide the backbone infrastructure for commercial operations.

Sky TV and the global automotive industry are just two examples.

As with any infrastructure components, these systems are reliant on ground based computers to provide elements of command-and-control.

They send data and equipment where they need to be, and can tell them what to do.

This opens up an opportunity to circumvent security - depending on how it is being applied.

Recent news stories have reported that US unmanned drone military aircraft were infected with a virus that gathered information.

If a malicious code is able to infect such a sensitive project, it is highly possible there could be other attacks targeting the information on military satellites satellites via system-to-system conversations.

I think that for years the basic information security assumption by military and government agencies was that they should keep their data on isolated networks that were not connected in any way to commercial and public communication infrastructure.

With this assumption and staff screening, they believed that the systems were safe.

However, in today's reality most military and government systems are interconnected and have substantial data links - some online and some offline - to public and commercial systems and networks.

Hence, once the "total isolation" assumption proved to be false, the traditional military security model collapsed in a magnificent way.

The latest, alleged, Landsat incident is a clear example of that. While the system is operated mainly from military facilities and systems, it can be accessed from a commercial station in Norway which in turn is connected to the internet.

The report hints that the attack on the control system was indeed related to this commercial control system.

This is yet another wake up call for these organisations to gradually abandon their older model and start deploying in-depth layered security into their information systems, much like the commercial organizations do.

We should remember though that making this change - both mentally and logistically - is a long process given the huge scope of these systems.

Fertility treatment raises tumor risk in study (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Women given drugs during fertility treatment to stimulate their ovaries to produce extra eggs have an increased risk of developing borderline ovarian tumors, Dutch researchers said on Thursday.

A large 15-year study found women undergoing in-vitro fertilization (IVF) were twice as likely to develop ovarian malignancies -- defined as either cancer or borderline tumors -- as similarly sub-fertile women who were not treated.

The risk was concentrated in borderline tumors, which have abnormal cells that may become cancerous but usually do not. The danger of invasive ovarian cancer was slightly higher in the IVF treatment group but this was not statistically significant.

Fertility experts said the results showed there was a need for further research, although they stressed the apparent risks were still very low.

"This ... goes some way to answering the questions that so many IVF patients ask. However, the results should be kept in proportion as the increase shown was from around five in a thousand to seven per thousand women," said Peter Braude of Kings College London.

Braude, who was not involved in the Dutch study, said the possible risks needed to be balanced against the important objective of IVF in conceiving a child.

Lead researcher Flora van Leeuwen of the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam said the findings were significant because the study was the first to include a comparison group of sub-fertile women not undergoing IVF.

That is important because having difficulty conceiving or never having been pregnant are in themselves known risk factors for ovarian tumors.

The study observed 25,000 women, of whom 19,000 received IVF. It found 61 ovarian malignancies among the IVF group, of which 31 were borderline tumors and 30 invasive cancer -- a proportion of borderline cases that was unusually high.

Richard Kennedy, general secretary of the International Federation of Fertility Societies (IF), noted that other studies over the past decade looking at ovarian stimulation and cancer risk had been generally reassuring.

"The IF remains of the view that the long-term risks are low but calls for continued vigilance through reporting of long-term outcomes with international collaboration," he said in a statement.

Phishing email masked as StubHub notice

An email scam masked as an order confirmation from StubHub landed in countless mailboxes Thursday.

The San Francisco-based online ticket broker, a subsidiary of eBay Inc., first learned of the scam early Thursday morning, and within a few hours was deluged with phone calls, said spokesman Glenn Lehrman.

"We don't have a sense yet of how big it is," he said.

The company has placed a warning notice on its home page advising recipients not to click on any link in the email. Lehrman said the company has been sending messages out through social media to notify customers.

The Better Business Bureau is also working with the StubHub to warn consumers.

Here's what you need to know:

The scam:
The email looks like a receipt for an order for two tickets to a boxing match in Las Vegas on Nov. 12. It appears to be sent by StubHub, and the charge is an alarming $2,766.95.

Lehrman said no accounts have been charged. The email apparently went to both StubHub users and individuals who have never bought tickets from the site.

Like any phishing scam, the fake email is aiming to dupe recipients into clicking on the embedded links, in an attempt to obtain sensitive information such as credit card account numbers and passwords.

The cure:
StubHub does not display credit card details on its site, but Lehrman said it is possible to order tickets from an established account using stored payment information.

Anyone who clicked through the email and entered StubHub account information should go to the company's website and change their password as soon as possible, which will make it harder for the scammers if they attempt to access accounts.

The crime:
The fake StubHub email appears to have originated in Eastern Europe, Lehrman said. That's a common origination point for online scams.

Phishing is usually used to steal financial information or personal information. Individuals who believe they've fallen for such a scam should report it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, or IC3, which is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National White Collar Crime Center. That can be done online and at the Federal Trade Commission site.

The suspect email can also be forwarded to: @uce.gov.

The StubHub scam mirrors other email frauds that purport to let recipients know they've won prizes or lotteries. Details on what to do if you've given out bank account information and more advice on avoiding such scams is available at APWG? or OnGuardOnline.gov.

PFT: T.O. gets offer from Arena Football League

Chicago Bears v Tampa Bay BuccaneersGetty Images

We?re checking in with teams as they hit their bye week. ?Or at least we are trying to.

Next up: The Chicago Bears.

Familiar position

Lovie Smith told everyone to calm down after the team?s loss to the Lions on Monday Night Football in Week 5. ?He pointed out that if the team could beat the Vikings and Bucs, they would be 4-3 just like last year at the bye.

Give Smith credit: That?s exactly what happened. ?After a?tumultuous?training camp and start to the season, the Bears are in decent enough shape.

The Bears season has a different feel to it after two strong efforts. They completely destroyed Minnesota, and controlled the action against the Bucs in London.

The Bears have proven capable of beating mediocre competition. They can?t beat the best NFC teams: The Packers, Saints, and Lions all have wins over Chicago.

Forte leads the way

Adrian Peterson is the best running back in the NFL. ?Matt Forte may be the most important to his team. ?Forte leads all players by a wide margin in yards from scrimmage with 1,091. ?He is just off Chris Johnson?s all time yards from scrimmage record pace.

It?s hard to overstate how good Forte is as a receiver. He has a shot to be the first running back since Marshall Faulk to put up over 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. It?s no coincidence Mike Martz was involved in both seasons.

Improving passing game

Jay Cutler may have enjoyed the best two game stretch of his Bears career in the loss to the Lions and the win over the Vikings. He is looking more comfortable. His pass protection has improved from absymal to simply lame.

The offense still has to be more consistent after some early ugly outings, but it?s headed in the right direction. It?s 12th in scoring despite the 21 sacks Cutler has taken. The team has a +4 turover margin.

Safety dance

Chris Harris started the season at strong safety; he was released Thursday. Brandon Meriweather was signed for $3.25 million and now sits on the bench. The team is going young with Major Wright and Chris Conte at the position. ?This is a shaky secondary overall.

Average defense

Lovie Smith teams are supposed to be built on defense. At this stage, the Bears have been ordinary stopping opponents. Lance Briggs and Brian Urlacher are still playing at a high level, but they don?t get a lot of help. The defensive line has been decent. Julius Peppers has played at less than 100%.

Chicago?s only chance to make a postseason push is for the defense to improve dramatically.

Angling for a wild card

The Bears are three games back in the NFC North, so their only hope for a playoff spot is a wild card. They are in decent shape with wins over NFC contenders like Atlanta and Tampa Bay.

The next two weeks after the bye are huge. ?The Bears travel to Philadelphia before hosting Detroit. Sweeping those two games would put Chicago in terrific position before an oddly timed four-game tour through the AFC West.

After seven weeks, the Bears are in the mix. Their recent play indicates we?ll probably be talking about Bears tiebreakers come late December.

Going off-the-cuff, Romney does himself few favors (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Mitt Romney may need a censor. For himself.

In the last few weeks in Nevada, the man who owns several homes told the state hit tough by the housing crisis: "Don't try and stop the foreclosure process. Let it run its course and hit the bottom."

At one point in Iowa, earlier this year, the former venture capitalist uttered, "Corporations are people," with the country in the midst of a debate over Wall Street vs. Main Street. At an event in economically suffering Florida, the retiree ? who is a multimillionaire many times over ? said, "I'm also unemployed."

Over the past year, the Republican presidential candidate has amassed a collection of off-the-cuff comments that expose his vulnerabilities and, taken together, could reinforce a perception that he's an out-of-touch elitist who lacks a core set of beliefs.

So far, the foot-in-mouth remarks haven't seemed to affect his standing in the nomination race.

Romney has run a far more cautious and disciplined campaign than his losing bid of four years ago. He's kept the focus on his core message: He's the strongest candidate able to beat President Barack Obama on the biggest issue of the campaign, the economy. He still enjoys leading positions in public opinion polls in early primary states and across the nation. Few, if any, of the other Republicans in the race have turned his remarks against him.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Romney's chief rival with the money to prove it, is all but certain to try. Perry has already started suggesting that Romney lives a life of privilege while he comes from humble roots. And Romney's eyebrow-raising comments are tailor-made for critical TV ads.

Look no further than the Democratic Party and Obama's advisers for proof of that.

Each time Romney says something that makes even his closest aides grimace, Democrats quickly put together a Web video highlighting the remark ? a preview of certain lines of attack come the general election should the former Massachusetts governor win the nomination.

"Mitt Romney's message to Arizona? You're on your own," says a new ad by the Democratic National Committee that jumps on Romney's foreclosure remarks.

Romney's team publicly dismisses their boss's occasional loose lips, dismissing them as inconsequential to voters focused on an unemployment rate hovering around 9 percent.

"It's a long campaign and at the end of the day people are going to judge Gov. Romney and his ability to take on President Obama over jobs and the economy. And certainly there will be a lot of back and forth as the campaign progresses," said Russ Schriefer, a Romney strategist.

"This election will be decided on big issues because the issues are so big and so important," Schriefer said. "And not on a gaffe or a mistake or a moment, any particularly moment. It's more about the big moments and who voters see and being able to turn the economy around."

It usually takes more than one gaffe or one mistake to undo a campaign. And other candidates have made their own potentially problematic comments.

Take, for instance, Herman Cain's assertion that the Wall Street protesters are in the streets to distract from Obama's record: "If you don't have a job and you're not rich, blame yourself." Or Perry's suggestion that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is "almost treasonous": "If this guy prints more money between now and the election, I don't what y'all would do to him in Iowa, but we would treat him pretty ugly down in Texas." Or former House Speaker Newt Gingrich explaining his infidelity: "There's no question at times of my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate."

But a string of unforced errors, when combined, can reinforce unfavorable perceptions of the candidate, as Romney aides privately acknowledge. And that's the trouble Romney faces ? just as John Kerry damaged himself when he racked up a series of equivocating comments on a series of issues while the Democratic nominee in 2004.

President George W. Bush's re-election campaign used Kerry's waffling ? conflicts between his votes and his quotes ? to cast him as an opportunist who would shift his positions to win votes.

Romney gave his critics a similar opening over the past few days. In Ohio, he refused to say whether he would support a local ballot initiative even as he visited a site where volunteers were making hundreds of phone calls to help Republicans defeat it. Issue Two would repeal Ohio Gov. John Kasich's restrictions on public sector employee bargaining.

It turned out that Romney had already weighed in, supporting Kasich's efforts in a June Facebook post. And, a day after the Ohio visit, Romney made clear where he stood, saying he was "110 percent" behind the anti-union effort.

There have been other instances of comments that could come back to haunt him. In Arizona at one point, he tried to highlight his father's role running an auto company but inadvertently painted himself as a have, rather than a have not.

"See, I'm a Detroit guy, so, you know, I only have domestics," he said, then added: "I have a couple of Cadillacs, at two different houses. You know, small crossovers."

During a recent debate, Romney suggested that the discovery of illegal immigrants working on his yard during his first presidential campaign was a problem ? not because it was illegal, but because "I'm running for office, for Pete's sake."

Comments like those could partly explain why Romney has kept a limited public schedule and favors closed events and appearances that play down spontaneous interaction with reporters.

Still, in some ways, the damage may already have been done. Expect to hear Romney's impolitic comments frequently as Republicans and Democrats alike try to derail Romney.

Boeing 787's inaugural flight lands in Hong Kong

The first commercial flight for Boeing's 787 jet has landed, after a 4-hour, eight-minute flight from Tokyo to Hong Kong.

The jet, nicknamed The Dreamliner by Boeing Corp., was flown by Japan's All Nippon Airways and was packed with aviation reporters and enthusiasts ? some of whom paid thousands of dollars for the privilege.

The first flight of the long-range 787 has been highly anticipated, in part because it comes after more than three years of manufacturing delays.

The jet is built out of lightweight materials that improve its fuel-efficiency. Its interior is designed in ways to make passengers more comfortable, including larger windows and better lighting.

U.N. to end mandate for NATO military operations in Libya (Reuters)

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) ? The U.N. Security Council plans on Thursday to end its authorization for a 7-month-old NATO military operation in Libya that led to the ouster and death of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

The plan to cancel the mandate comes despite a request from Libya's interim government for the Security Council to wait until the National Transitional Council makes a decision on whether it wants NATO to help it secure its borders.

The 15-nation council will meet at 10:00 a.m. EDT to vote on a British-drafted resolution, obtained by Reuters, that would terminate the U.N. mandate which set the no-fly zone over Libya and permitted foreign military forces to use "all necessary measures" to protect Libyan civilians.

If the resolution is approved, as expected, the U.N. mandate would lapse October 31 at 11:59 p.m. Libyan time (5:59 p.m. EDT).

Although the draft resolution does not specifically refer to NATO, the alliance's legal mandate to carry out the air strikes that enabled Libyan rebel forces to defeat Gaddafi's troops was supplied by Security Council resolution 1973, adopted in March.

The NTC officially announced Libya's liberation on October 23, days after the capture and swift death of Gaddafi.

Libyan Deputy U.N. Ambassador Ibrahim Dabbashi asked the council on Wednesday to wait before terminating the mandate.

Dabbashi said the government needed time to assess the security situation in its country and its ability to monitor its borders.

Western diplomats, however, said council members planned to go ahead and terminate the U.N. mandate. They said issues the NTC had suggested it would like NATO to help with, including border security, fell outside the U.N. mandate to protect civilians and enforce a no-fly zone.

The resolution does not lift the arms embargo or other U.N. sanctions on Libya that have been in place for half a year.

The Security Council in March authorized a no-fly zone and foreign military intervention to protect Libyans from security forces Gaddafi had deployed to suppress pro-democracy uprisings across the country.

The council is also expected to approve a Russian-drafted resolution this week that voices concern about the proliferation of shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles across Libya and beyond its borders, U.N. diplomats said.

X-Ray Screening Doesn't Prevent Lung Cancer Deaths: Study (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 26 (HealthDay News) -- Using chest X-rays to screen for lung cancer doesn't prevent deaths from the disease, a new study finds.

"There really was no benefit of the screening," said study co-author Dr. Christine Berg, chief of the early detection research group at the division of cancer prevention at the U.S. National Cancer Institute. "We detected some of the cancers a little earlier than we would have, but not early enough or in large enough numbers to really have an impact on lung cancer mortality."

Experts noted that the results of the large randomized clinical trial should put an end to any lingering questions about whether X-rays are useful in lung cancer screening. Recent research has indicated that CT scans are more effective at spotting malignancies earlier.

The study involved more than 150,000 never smokers, former smokers and current smokers aged 55 to 74 taking part in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial.

Half of the participants, including smokers and nonsmokers, underwent annual chest X-rays for three or four years between 1993 and 2001; half did not get screened.

During 13 years of follow-up, similar numbers of people in both groups were diagnosed with lung cancer -- 1,696 in the screened group and 1,620 who were not screened.

There were 1,213 lung cancer deaths in the screened group and 1,230 in the unscreened group. Those who were not screened were no more likely to die of lung cancer than those who underwent the annual X-rays, according to the study in the Nov. 2 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. The research was published early online and is scheduled to be presented Wednesday at the American College of Chest Physicians annual meeting, in Honolulu.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States and worldwide, according to background information in the study.

Starting in the 1950s and through the 1970s -- a time when there were both lots of American smokers and a growing understanding about the dangers of smoking -- there was great interest in using chest X-rays to screen for lung cancer, Berg explained.

Studies published in the 1980s showed chest X-rays weren't all that effective, but those studies had small numbers of participants and other flaws that left lingering questions that have been answered in a more definitive way in this new study, Berg said.

Other experts agreed. "The study shows that lung cancer screening with chest X-ray isn't very effective, and certainly not as effective as CT scans," said Robert Smith, director of cancer screening at the American Cancer Society. "This paper indicates that the long tradition of using a chest X-ray to screen for lung cancer is over."

Another study, published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that using a newer technology cut the death rate by 20 percent compared to X-rays.

Helical CT, also called "spiral" CT scan, gives a more precise look at lung tissue. While an X-ray is a single image, portions of which can be blocked by the ribs, a spiral CT scan takes pictures of multiple layers of the lungs to create a three-dimensional image. Think of it like slicing a loaf of bread, with each image about 2.5 millimeters to 3 millimeters thick, Berg explained.

"Lung cancer screening with low-dose helical CT is the only technology that has ever been shown to lower lung cancer mortality," she said.

The downsides of CT scans are that they're more expensive, and they have many more false positives because they're so sensitive, she added.

While lung cancer caught early is more treatable than lung cancer caught later, one challenge with the disease is that many lung cancers are aggressive and difficult to treat, Berg noted. "It's only recently that the drug companies and researchers are beginning to find some drugs that work," she said.

Morning UV exposure may be less damaging to the skin

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2011) ? Research from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill suggests that the timing of exposure to UV rays -- early in the morning or later in the afternoon -- can influence the onset of skin cancer.

The study, performed in mice, found that exposure to UV radiation in the morning increased the risk of skin cancer by 500 percent over identical doses in the afternoon. Although mice and humans both reside on a 24-hour day, the "circadian" clocks of these nocturnal and diurnal creatures run counter each other. This key difference in biology means that humans are most protected from the sun's harmful rays when mice are most susceptible, and vice versa.

"Therefore, our research would suggest that restricting sunbathing or visits to the tanning booth to morning hours would reduce the risk of skin cancer in humans," said senior study author Aziz Sancar, MD, PhD, a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and Sarah Graham Kenan professor of biochemistry and biophysics in the UNC School of Medicine. Sancar is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Turkish Academy of Sciences "However, further studies in humans are needed before we can make any definitive recommendations."

Sancar has previously shown that a protein called XPA, responsible for repairing the DNA damage wrought by UV radiation, waxes and wanes throughout the day. In a study published online the week of October 24-30 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, he and his colleagues looked to see if the cyclical nature of this

DNA repair molecule had an influence on the onset of skin cancer.

They exposed two groups of mice to UV radiation -- either at 4 a.m. or at 4 p.m. -- and waited for cancer to develop. Mice irradiated when the repair activity was at its minimum developed tumors much faster and at five-fold higher frequency compared with mice exposed to UV when the protein's repair function was at its maximum.

The researchers predict that humans will have a higher rate of DNA repair in the morning and would be less prone to the carcinogenic effect of UV radiation in the morning hours. They plan to measure actual DNA repair rates in the skin of human volunteers to confirm that morning sun is safest for humans.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of General Medical Sciences and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. UNC co-authors with Sancar were Shobhan Gaddameedhi (study 1st author), Christopher P. Selby, William K. Kaufmann, and Robert C. Smart of North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C.

Democrats seek hearing on HGH tests (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Three Democratic congressmen are urging the House Energy and Commerce Committee to hold hearings on the impasse between the NFL and players union on testing for human growth hormone.

California Rep. Henry Waxman, the top Democrat on the committee, and two others made the request in a letter Tuesday to chairman Fred Upton, a Michigan Republican.

The NFL and the players agreed to begin blood testing for HGH as part of their new collective bargaining agreement reached in late July ? but only if the union agreed to the methods. The union has delayed implementing the test, asking for more scientific data to prove it is reliable.

"This delay is a cause for concern," wrote Waxman, along with G.K. Butterfield of North Carolina and Bobby Rush of Illinois, both of whom chair subcommittees on the panel.

The lawmakers cited a recent letter to the union and NFL from nearly two dozen scientists and lab directors from around the world stating the current test is scientifically reliable; and noted that the test has been used in the Olympics.

"There appear to be few questions about the validity of the HGH test," the Democrats wrote.

They also noted that CBS football analyst Boomer Esiason, a former NFL quarterback, said that the union is "backing off because they have players guilty of using this substance," and said that many believe at least 20 percent of players are using it.

"We hope that this is not the case," the congressmen wrote. "Committee hearings will allow us to learn about these issues, hearing from top scientists about the validity of HGH testing and from the NFL and the NFLPA about the extent of HGH use in the league and their plans for testing to eliminate such use."

In an email to The Associated Press, union head DeMaurice Smith said that players' health and the safety and integrity of the game go hand-in-hand.

"I applaud the members in their request for a hearing and look forward to fully discussing all of these issues as soon as possible," he said. "We are sending letters to the teams immediately in order to assist Congress in its fact finding mission."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league appreciated the lawmakers' commitment to the issue, "but there should be no need for this hearing if the union would simply live up to its agreements."

Upton's office had no immediate comment Tuesday.

Earlier this month, the chairman and ranking member of another panel, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, emerged from a meeting with the NFL and players union and announced a deal to begin collecting blood for testing. But the union demurred, and last week, told the NFL to hold off collecting the blood.

The union is seeking data from the athletes who were used to originally set thresholds as to what constitutes a positive test, so it can compare that data with a population study on football players. The union believes players could have naturally higher HGH levels than those of other athletes.

It's Food Day: Watch ?Food Deserts: Legal, Social, and Public Health ...

OMG, it?s Food Day 2011,?so check the link to see what?s going on about the Bay Area today.

Here?s the manifesto:

At UC Hastings in Civic Center, the UCSF / UC Hastings Consortium on Law, Science & Health Policy will put on??Food Deserts: Legal, Social, and Public Health Challenges? starting at 1:00 PM.

Watch it on the livestream, why not? Or see about heading over to this free event yourself.

All the deets:

?Food Deserts: Legal, Social, and Public Health Challenges

Start: 10/24/2011 from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Location: 200 McAllister, Alumni Reception Center

The UCSF / UC Hastings Consortium on Law, Science & Health Policy is sponsoring a conference entitled ?Food Deserts: Legal, Social, and Public Health Challenges? on Food Day, October 24, 2011.
The conference will bring together scholars from the health sciences and the law, as well as policymakers, activists, and food industry members, to discuss two important aspects of ?food deserts,? places where access to a nutritionally-adequate diet is severely restricted.

One panel, Nourishing Our Neighborhoods: Insights from Law, Planning, and Industry, will cover the broad issue of geographical food deserts, usually urban areas inhabited by mostly-poor people whose transportation and finances are limited, where food sellers are predominantly small stores that cannot stock a wide variety of fresh food items, and where full-service grocery stores hesitate to locate. Are there policies (such as those in zoning rules) that could be changed to enable oases in these food deserts? What impact does, for example, the addition of a full-service grocery store have on the health of the neighboring area?

Another panel, Food and Nutrition in Correctional Institutions, will consider issues relevant to prisons and jails. While food offerings must meet certain basic caloric and nutritional requirements, the institutional nature of food preparation and food service might make that food less than appealing, and the healthier elements of meals might well be those not regularly or fully consumed. The supplemental food offerings ? those for sale in these institutions ? are not likely to be nutritious. Some research suggests that improved nutrition in prisons leads to improved penal outcomes. If that is so, what policy changes should be implemented? Would such changes be cost-beneficial, considering penal outcomes and the government?s responsibility for health care of prisoners?

At 5 pm, Dr. David Kessler, former Commissioner of the United States Food and Drug Administration and Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology and Biostatistics, UCSF, will give the keynote address on The End of Overeating. This conference will be free and open to the public.?

(AP) ? Mike Napoli was dialed in, no matter who he was going to face.

A charmed season for Napoli and the Texas Rangers got even better Monday night, thanks to a most unlikely twist ? a bullpen telephone mix-up.

After a dropped ball and a dropped call, of sorts, loaded the bases in the eighth inning, Napoli delivered a tiebreaking two-run double that beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 and gave Texas a 3-2 edge in the World Series.

The Rangers moved within one win of capturing their first crown, which they can do Wednesday night in St. Louis.

"We certainly won't be out there thinking about we've just got to win one game," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "I've been there before, and that doesn't work."

And the Cardinals' approach? Maybe get a smartphone, or perhaps next time they should try texting the bullpen.

Napoli's go-ahead stroke came off Marc Rzepczynski, right after a potential double-play ball slipped away from the St. Louis reliever, causing manager Tony La Russa to put his hands to his head in exasperation.

More bruising, at least to the Cardinals: Rzepczynski wasn't even supposed to face Napoli.

La Russa said he called down to the bullpen earlier in the eighth and wanted Rzepczynski and closer Jason Motte to get ready. Instead, bullpen coach Derek Lilliquist heard only Rzepczynski at first. La Russa called again to ask for Motte and this time Lilliquist heard "Lynn," as in reliever Lance Lynn.

"I was more frustrated the double-play ball went off the glove and the fact we had numerous chances to add runs. That's probably more frustrating," La Russa said.

"The other part just happens. I mean, it's loud down there, and sometimes you call down there and you have to wait until the crowd and a guy gets up late. I mean, this is not unusual," he said.

Said Lilliquist: "You get a bunch of people, and it's loud."

"He wanted Motte going easy to back Zep up and I thought I heard Lynn. It transpired from there," he said. "It's basically miscommunication. It was loud. A lot of places are like that. The phone is as good as any phone anywhere."

The right-handed Napoli, meanwhile, was set to face the left-handed Rzepczynski with the one out and the score 2-all.

"I didn't really see anybody warming up in the bullpen, so I kind of figured I was going to face him," Napoli said.

"Just trying to get something to the outfield, you know, get a sac fly, get that run across the board," he said. "I was trying to stay short and I got a pitch I could handle over the middle of the plate and put it in the gap."

After Napoli put Texas ahead, the slugging catcher capped off his night of double duty by throwing out a would-be base stealer in the ninth as Albert Pujols struck out.

"Pujols is going to put it in play, he's a good contact hitter," Napoli said, "and they were just starting the runner, 3-2. As soon as I got it, I just got rid of it and put it on the bag."

In the seventh, Napoli threw out Allen Craig at second with Pujols at the plate. Apparently, Pujols put on his own hit-and-run, then didn't swing.

Texas can wrap it up in Game 6, with Colby Lewis facing Jaime Garcia. The weather forecast for Busch Stadium is daunting, calling for rain and temperatures around 50.

If the Rangers eventually do win it all, the Texas fans who stood and chanted Napoli's name may forever remember his two-run hit.

If the Cardinals lose, there's no doubt which play will stick with La Russa for a long, long time.

It was tied when Texas put runners on first and second with one out in the eighth, and Rzepczynski was summoned. David Murphy followed with a bouncer back to the mound, a possible inning-ending double play in the making.

But the ball appeared to glance off Rzepczynski's hand and trickled harmlessly away for a single that loaded the bases. In the dugout, La Russa immediately threw his hands to his head, a true "Oh, no!" moment.

Napoli, who came close to a three-run homer in his previous at-bat and hit a big homer in a Game 4 win, sent a drive up the alley against the pitcher with the nickname "Scrabble." The double off Rzepczynski sure spelled good things for Texas, with the excitable Washington waving the runners around from the dugout.

Darren Oliver earned the win and Neftali Feliz closed for his second save of the Series and sixth of the postseason.

Adrian Beltre and Mitch Moreland hit solo home runs off Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter. Texas had fallen behind 2-0 early with C.J. Wilson pitching.

Later, it became a battle of the bullpens and Texas prevailed.

Octavio Dotel gave up a leadoff double to Young in the eighth, struck out Beltre and intentionally walked Nelson Cruz. That left it up to Rzepczynski, and the game quickly slipped away.

La Russa appeared stunned by the turnaround. Later in the eighth, because of the mix-up, he brought in Lynn and had him issue an intentional walk to the only batter he faced. Motte eventually ended the inning, but it was too late.

Fittingly, Napoli had a role in the final play. Lance Berkman struck out and the ball hit Napoli's shin guard and trickled up the first base line, where the catcher picked it up and tossed to first base to end the game.

Pujols drew three intentional walks, including a pass with two outs and none on in the seventh. The St. Louis slugger then nearly used his legs to put his team ahead.

Pujols was running hard on a 3-2 pitch that Matt Holliday hit for a single to left-center. Pujols chugged around the bags and third base coach Jose Oquendo initially waved him home, only to put up a late stop sign.

Would Pujols have been safe on shortstop Elvis Andrus' wide throw to the plate? Maybe. But it became moot when Berkman was intentionally walked to load the bases and David Freese flied out against Alexi Ogando.

NOTES: Playing on his 34th birthday, Rafael Furcal led off the game with a liner that 3B Beltre backhanded. Furcal started Game 4 the same way. ... Wilson matched the postseason record for walks ? 19 ? set by Cleveland's Jaret Wright in 1997. Wilson's 11 walks in the World Series are the most since Allie Reynolds in 1951. ... Cardinals reliever Arthur Rhodes turned 42. He's the oldest player to celebrate a birthday while playing in the Series. Jim Palmer was 38 in 1983.

'Very dangerous' inmates escape Fla. prison

Police are searching for two "very dangerous" inmates of a Florida prison who escaped early Monday morning, police said.

Officials realized that Rondell Reed and Leviticus Taylor were missing from their shared cell during a routine headcount, shortly before 5 a.m.

The prison immediately went into lockdown and officials later found the inmates' red prison jumpsuits during a search of the jail.

Police believe the pair escaped through a vent in their cell into a maintenance hallway.

"They likely had some type of rod that they used to break the locks off the secured doors in the hallway," said Indian River County Sheriffs Office spokesman Jeff Luther. "They then climbed over the fences around the prison that are topped with razor wire."

Police suspect that the men had outside help with their escape and are considered "very dangerous," although it is not known if they are armed, according to Luther.

Reed, 52, is 5-foot-7 and has gray hair. He was being held at the prison on first degree murder and other charges.

Taylor, 25, has closely cropped hair, according to police, not the dreadlocks as shown in the photo above. He had recently been charged with first degree murder.

Both convicts have multiple tattoos on their arms and bodies, police said. Up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to Reed and Taylor's arrest.

Sari Eckler Cooper: Does Sexual Dysfunction Lead to Divorce?

When we hear about celebrity couples splitting up, it's often due to infidelity -- or so we're told by the gossip magazines. What is never reported are the couples who divorce due to one or the other having a sexual dysfunction. It may be obvious that this is perhaps the last realm of privacy that has remained amid all the other salacious details that come out of sex scandals.

From Monica Lewinsky's detailed report on her encounters with former President Clinton to the more recent and dramatic story of Arnold Schwarzenegger fathering a child with the former nanny while married to Maria Shriver, we have heard many stories of sexting, bathroom sex, and sex videos in which famous people were involved. But to date no public figure has declared that they or their soon-to-be ex were having sexual dysfunction in the bedroom.

However, that is what leads many couples into my therapy office. Sometimes it's the pain that a wife is having during intercourse with her husband, other times it's a man's inability to sustain his erection while having sex with his wife. At times it's a woman's freezing up due to past abuse that's causing her to have vaginismus with her partner. The couple generally come in feeling depressed and frustrated.

At first, most partners or spouses are generally understanding and sympathetic when it becomes clear there is a problem. What follows, however, is a pattern of anxiety, avoidance and then at times total refraining from any type of sexual encounter. Both partners end up feeling alone, guilty and sometimes angry. The sexual activity they are avoiding would give them a sense of bonding, comfort and physical release that is lacking in the relationship. The person who is experiencing the problem may be too embarrassed to get professional help, and may feel guilty for refraining from doing so. The partner without the problem may feel guilty for asking their spouse/partner for sex so frequently because they feel they're hurting the other's feelings by bringing up what they're trying to avoid. The partner without the dysfunction may also be angry because they feel entitled to a sex life, they feel shut out of the process of improving the sexual relationship, and they feel upset that their partner has dragged their feet about going to get help.

It is this last element that can sometimes cause the couple to end their relationship. If the person with the erectile dysfunction or the pain issue has put off coming to see a professional for a very long time, and the sex life has subsequently stopped for many years, apathy can set in. Even an angry couple at least has a connection with one another. When couples wait too long to get help, one partner may detach emotionally and have difficulty reattaching; they feel that their needs have been ignored for so long that they don't believe they can love and depend on their partner.

The take-away lesson is to go get help sooner rather than later. If you have a doctor who doesn't take your complaints seriously, get another opinion. Seek out a sex therapist who can refer you to the right professionals to get the proper evaluation and explain the problem.

With an ill father and a newborn, Grispi puts MMA on the backburner

What's wrong with Josh Grispi? That was the question on plenty of lips around the MMA community.

It turns out that life got in the way ... for now.

The fast-rising prospect saw his career derailed a bit by some trouble in the Octagon, but now all it has gone on hold as the 23-year-old is dealing with a situation that folks 20 and 30 years older would have trouble juggling.

In mid-August, Grispi's wife got through a difficult child birth when the UFC featherweight found out that his father had a brain tumor. On Aug. 14, just two days after Josh Jr. was born, Grispi's father, Richard, found out that the earache he was suffering from was a lot more serious.

"He's one to not go to the hospital. He'll just tough it out," Grispi told the Boston Herald at the beginning of October. "But I called and made an appointment for him and when he went in they rushed him right from the CT scan in Plymouth to Tufts in Boston. He didn't know what the heck what was going on."

It was a real wake-up call for the younger Grispi.

"I was a mess as soon as I knew he needed brain surgery," Grispi said. "I was just thinking it was his first grandson and he was just born and now with all this stuff, I want my dad to be there with his grandson. There was just a lot of stuff going through my head."

With training camp for UFC 136 about to take off, the -native had no choice but to drop out of his fight against Matt Grice.

"All I can think about is I don't want my dad to see my last two fights be losses," Grispi said. "I want to get back in there. But I don't think I should have even fought those two fights (2010 losses against Dustin Poirier and ). I should have just taken care of myself when I needed to, but I needed money. I was having a kid so I needed to save up more money. I was fighting for the wrong reasons."

Grispi has a bright future in front of him. Now it's time to take of the real important things in his life. MMA can wait, hopefully he comes back with the kind of focus that got him very close to landing a 2010 title shot against Jose Aldo Jr.

"Now I want to get back into it and love it again and not look at it like a job anymore," Grispi said. "My other (pre-UFC) fights, it wasn't like a job. I was just having fun, going in there and doing my thing. Then I put all this pressure on myself and (the losses) happened. I'm looking to get back in there as quickly as possible, but not to the point where I can't go in there and have a blast like I usually do."
