$99 Ouya Android gaming console hits Kickstarter ? Video Games ...

Update: It seems Ouya is turning out to be incredibly popular. Not even a day has passed and the total raised is about to fly past the $950,000 Boxer8 hoped to raise. Could this end up being a Kickstarter project more successful than Double Fine Adventure?

When we first started hearing about the?stylish Ouya gaming box, there weren?t a lot of details to go around. Its creators were aiming for a street price of $99, the console and controller were designed by Yves Behar, and all the games offered on Ouya would be free-to-play. Now, Ouya has hit Kickstarter and Boxer8 (the company behind Ouya) is offering up the full details.

For starters, they?ve revealed hardware specs. The Ouya will run an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor (just like the Nexus 7), 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage. That?s not a ton of space for games if you?re talking about full-blown, immersive console-quality titles, but there is a USB 2.0 port onboard as well, which should make hooking up an external hard drive possible. Ouya will also feature 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, and an HDMI output will push 1080P video to your HDTV or monitor.

Android is the key, of course, and Boxer8 is hoping that ease of development and hackability will attract developers to Ouya in swarms. They?ve already gotten some of the biggest names in indie game development interested, including Mojang, Karateka, and Madfinger Games. One interesting note is that every Ouya will ship with the platform?s SDK installed ? meaning it?s not just a console, but a development unit as well.

And all the great games Boxer8 hopes fill the stores of Ouya?s digital market? They?ll include a free-to-play option. Whether that?s a trial, a feature-limited experience, or a full-blown freebie funded by in-game purchases is up to developers, but they?re following the model established by mobile games and an incresing number of MMOs it seems.

While games are front and center, video will be an important part of the Ouya experience, too. Boxer8 has already teamed up with Twitch.TV, the popular game broadcasting service. It wouldn?t be a shock to see apps like Netflix and Hulu make their way to Ouya either, since it?s really just another Tegra 3 Android device.

Boxer8 is already a third of the way to their $950,000 goal ? not a surprise since $95 gets you a first-run console and controller. If a projected ship date of March 2013 doesn?t bother you, head on over to Kickstarter and pledge away. Every dollar they raise past their goal just means more awesomeness once the Ouya arrives.
